Scale & Proportion

The colonnade runs the length of the hall and lifts — and the size you choose decides whether the room views that procession or joins it.

The eye travels down the gallery and upward at once, along the marble and into the vaulted light overhead. Width governs a horizontal composition, and the hall reads best when given room to extend across the wall. Because the gaze gathers at the central axis, hang height carries real weight — with the lower edge 8–12 inches above the workbench, the scene resolves from seated and standing positions alike. Smaller formats hold the carved detail and the play of overhead light at close range, and the piece keeps its quiet. Chosen large, the gallery becomes the axis of the room, the architecture everything else arranges itself around.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the workbench, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the workbench width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full gallery
