Scale & Proportion

She lifts her face to the panther's and the grotto opens in balance to either side — and the size you choose decides whether the room views that meeting or is held in the hush around it.

The weight gathers where the two meet: the second cat holding the foreground with jaws open, waterfalls coming down to either side, the pool glowing turquoise at the right, the owl waiting at the edge. Width governs firmly at nearly twice as wide as tall, and the grotto needs real lateral clearance before it can open. Set the frame at the midpoint of the wall span — the composition is already symmetrical, so the frame's axis and the encounter's axis are one, and a hang pushed to one side breaks a balance the artwork has spent its whole width establishing. What sits below governs the height; chased upward toward a tall beam, the encounter lifts clear of the sightline it was built for. Modest sizes hold the fall of cream silk, the wet sheen along a shoulder, a single flame against black water. Chosen large, the work becomes the deep horizontal the room arranges itself around.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above what stands below, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the console, platform, or seating width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) for detail; 10–16 ft (3.0–4.9 m) for the full composition
