Scale & Proportion

The Cavalier holds the center of a turning sky — and the size you choose decides how far the eye travels to reach him.

Cloud and falling light cross the frame before the dark mass of horse and rider arrives at its center. Width governs a true panorama, twice as wide as it is tall, and the sky needs clearance on either side before it can open. Because the composition gathers toward those central figures, hang height decides the reading — with the lower edge 8–12 inches above a desk, console, or sofa, the scene resolves from seated and standing positions alike. Smaller formats concentrate the monochrome's finer gradations: weathered stone, the deep storm-blacks, the tonal fall of cloud. Chosen large, the panorama becomes the axis the room arranges itself around.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the desk or console width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full panorama
