Scale & Proportion

The cavalier rises against open sky — and the size you choose decides whether the room looks up at him or composes itself beneath him.

Mass gathers low in this frame — the carved base, the horse's flank — while the head lifts free at the top, and the eye travels that whole rise. Because the weight sits at the bottom, hang height carries the work: with the lower edge 8–12 inches above a sofa or console, the cavalier reads from seated and standing positions alike. The wall above matters as much as the wall beside; anything hung close overhead cuts the lift short before it resolves. Modest sizes hold the weathered stone and the carved detail of horse and shield at close range. Chosen large, the figure takes on real bearing, and the room arranges itself beneath the stance.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the sofa or console width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full silhouette
