Scale & Proportion

Four bands of blue climb this facade — and the size you choose decides which one meets you at eye level.

The facade climbs in stacked registers: atelier glass, first-floor shutters, ground-floor shutters, planters at the cobbles. Hang height decides which one meets a standing viewer. Chosen large and hung low, the work opens at the white door, the way the house greets anyone climbing the lane. A smaller format lifts the eye to the upper windows instead. Scale also governs intimacy — only the generous sizes keep the plaster cockatoo, the cats on their separate ledges, and the ceramic creatures behind the atelier glass legible from across a room.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture beneath
  • Artwork Width — 100–150% of the bay it centers on, not the full counter run
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full composition
