Scale & Proportion

The colonnade runs the full width of the frame — and the size you choose decides whether the room looks onto that horizon or acquires one.

The composition stretches wide and level, and the eye travels with it: column to column, arch to arch, along the golden doors and the balustrade above, out to the caisses and still water below. Wall span governs here more than anything — a facade this expansive needs room to run before its calm reads as breadth rather than compression. Hang height sets the level: with the lower edge 8–12 inches above a console or sideboard, the full sweep resolves from seated and standing positions alike. Smaller formats hold the stone, the gilt, and the glass in fine detail. Chosen large, the colonnade stops being a view and becomes the wall's own horizon.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the console or sideboard width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full colonnade
