Scale & Proportion

The grove climbs from still water into open sky — and the size you choose decides how far the room travels upward with it.

Ascent is the subject: fountain reeds at the water's edge, the green-and-gold mass of the canopy above them, open sky at the top of the frame. Autumn color and the solitary figure both sit in the lower third, which makes hang height consequential — with the lower edge 8–12 inches above a sofa or console, the climb begins where a seated viewer's eye already rests. Vertical breathing room matters more than lateral span here, since a low ceiling truncates the ascent before it resolves. Modest sizes hold the fountain detail and leaf texture at close range. Chosen large, the grove becomes the room's vertical axis and draws the whole space upward with it.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the sofa or console width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full ascent
