Scale & Proportion

Hung above the seating, read from across the room — the gate opens at the far end of a long look.

This is a work for the room where the household actually settles, not the hall it passes through: a sofa, a low table, a door to the sea. Distance is the first requirement here, so hang it above the seating and let it face the length of the space. The lower edge belongs 8–12 inches above the sofa or bench, close enough that the work reads as belonging to the seating rather than floating free of it; chased upward toward the ceiling, the gate lifts out of reach of anyone sitting under it. Set the frame at the midpoint of the wall span — Phobetor and the resting lion each hold an edge, and a hang pushed to one side breaks a balance the cavern has spent its whole width establishing. Modest sizes hold the gems worked into her regalia, one white butterfly against wet rock, a single strand in the great mane.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the seating, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the sofa, console, or seating width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) for detail; 10–16 ft (3.0–4.9 m) for the full sweep
