Scale & Proportion

Marble and overhead light gather the court around its axis — and the size you choose decides whether the room holds that axis or becomes it.

The composition reads across and upward, drawing the gaze into the marble and the court that frames it. Width is the governing dimension here: horizontal work wants room to extend, and the court commands a wall only when given clearance on either side. Because the central action gathers at the axis, hang height carries real weight — with the lower edge 8–12 inches above the sofa, the scene resolves from seated and standing positions without crowding the room. Smaller sizes bring quiet and intimacy; chosen large, the work stops being an object on the wall and becomes the architecture the rest of the space arranges itself around.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the sofa or console width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full court
