Scale & Proportion

The eye moves the way grief does — beginning small, and the size you choose decides how much of that rising a room can hold.

The Ancient One's face fills the frame edge to edge, its gaze occupying the upper register while Peronella stands alone at the water below. Because the weight sits low and wide, hang height decides how the piece meets a room — with the lower edge 8–12 inches above a sofa or console, the full mass reads from seated and standing positions alike. Give it generous clearance to either side; a composition this vast compresses badly when crowded. Modest sizes hold the cracked-stone texture of the skin and the single ember of maroon at close range. Chosen large, the creature stops depicting scale and becomes it — the architecture the room takes its order from.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the sofa or console width beneath it
