Scale & Proportion

The stone rises and Peronella stands small at its base — and the size you choose decides whether the room keeps a window onto that or takes on its weight.

Scale here is built from a single vertical relationship: ancient stone climbing slowly through a stand of bare trees, a figure in a maroon cloak at the foot of it. Nothing in the frame competes with that rise — the trees frame it, the mist softens its edges. Because the weight sits high and the intimacy sits low, hang height carries more consequence than usual: with the lower edge 8–12 inches above a sofa or console, Peronella stays readable from a seated position while the stone above her still has room to climb rather than crowd the ceiling. At the smaller end the composition reads as an intimate window into the wetland, holding moss on old bark and the gold embroidery at her collar. At the larger end the stone's scale becomes the room's own architecture, and the piece stops being a window and becomes the room's quiet emotion.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the sofa or console width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full climb
