Scale & Proportion

Saturn reclines the full breadth of the Bassin — and the size you choose sets the pace at which the eye travels with him.

Repose is the subject, and it sits low and wide: the gilded figure at rest, the shell-and-coral base beneath him, still water, the garden receding behind. Because the weight of the composition lies along the bottom of a cinematic frame, hang height determines what a seated viewer meets — with the lower edge 8–12 inches above a sofa or console, Saturn settles into the furniture rather than floating above it. Width governs everything else; a 16:9 frame wants clearance on either side before its stillness reads as calm rather than crowding. Modest formats keep the gilt and the carved shell legible at close range. At the largest sizes the quiet becomes the room's own, and the space arranges itself around it.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — lower edge 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the furniture, read from seated and standing
  • Artwork Width — 70–85% of the sofa or console width beneath it
  • Viewing Distance — 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) close; 8–14 ft (2.4–4.3 m) for the full composition
