Scale & Proportion

The arch holds the center of the turn — and the size you choose decides whether the stair passes a picture or climbs toward one.

The eye travels outward along the entablature before rising to the sky held above it. This work hangs on a half-landing, which changes every measurement: the viewer always arrives from below, so hang height is read from the climb rather than from a seated position. Center the piece 60–66 inches above the landing floor, then confirm the lower edge clears the handrail and newel from every step of the approach — hung low, the balustrade crops it as you rise; hung high, it tips away at close range. The stair governs width, not furniture. Smaller formats read as domestic pictures and surrender authority at this height. Chosen large, the arch extends its own monumentality into the hall and becomes the axis the stair turns around.

  • Lateral Clearance — 12–18 in (30–46 cm) per side for small works; 18–30+ in (46–76+ cm) for large
  • Hang Height — center 60–66 in (152–168 cm) above the landing floor, read from the climb
  • Artwork Width — 60–80% of the stair flight below; confirm clearance above handrail and newel
  • Viewing Distance — 3–5 ft (0.9–1.5 m) from the landing; 15–25 ft (4.6–7.6 m) from the hall floor
